How to make traditional American Apple Pie

The American apple pie is a trendy apple pie in the kitchen of the United States that is made by baking a dough filled with chopped spiced apples.

The result is a very aromatic apple pie with a characteristic flavour in which the inside is tender, and the outer crust is crunchy.

Apple pie came to the United States via British, French, and Dutch settlers during the 17th and 18th centuries, and the current recipe has changed very little from the original.

This dessert is considered a symbol of American culture. There is even a widely used expression that says “as American as apple pie” (as American as an apple pie ) to refer to something typical American.

Ingredients (for a 22 cm mould)
For the mass:
  • 310 grams of flour
  • 220 gr of cold butter
  • 60 ml of ice water
  • One teaspoon salt
  • For the filling:
  • 1300 gr of apples
  • 50 grams of sugar
  • One tablespoon of lemon juice
  • a teaspoon of ground cinnamon
  • a pinch of salt
  • One egg yolk
  • One tablespoon of cream
  • 15 grams of butter
  • sugar to decorate

Prepare the apple pie crust
To prepare the apple pie dough:
  1. Put the flour and salt in a bowl and mix.
  2. Cut the cold butter into cubes and add them to the bowl.
  3. Mix everything with the rods so there is a sandy mixture with small pieces.
  4. Add the ice water, mix and begin to shape the dough, avoiding over-kneading.
  5. Add a little more water if needed.

Divide the dough into two equal portions, cover them with kitchen film and let them rest in the fridge for approximately 1 hour (if possible, overnight is better).

Take out one of the portions of dough and stretch it with the help of a roller. Dust the mould with flour, so the cake does not stick, and cover it with the dough, trimming the excess edges. Put it in the fridge.

Prepare the pie filling.

To prepare the pie filling, peel the apples, core them and cut them into slices. Place them in a bowl, add the lemon juice, sugar, cinnamon and salt and mix everything well.

Remove the mould with the dough from the refrigerator and fill it with the apples. Cut the butter into very small cubes and spread them on top.

Roll out the other portion of the dough and cover the tart, making a crease along the edge to seal the tart. Make a few small cuts in the surface, so it ventilates in the oven.

In a small bowl, mix the egg yolk with the cream and paint the surface of the cake with the help of a brush. Sprinkle a little sugar over the tart.

Bake the tart in the preheated oven at 200ºC for 20 minutes, then lower the temperature to 180ºC and bake another 35-40 minutes until the apple pie is golden.

With what to accompany the American apple pie

The American apple pie is usually served with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or cream, a combination of flavours and temperatures that will surprise you. However, you can also eat it alone.

How to decorate the American apple pie

You can make strips with the dough on top and place them as if they were a rack. This is another of the usual ways American apple pie is served.


You can prepare the dough in advance and store it in the freezer, and it will keep in good condition for a month.

When filling the mould with the apples, it does not matter if there is a large amount left since the volume is reduced when baking.

A 22 cm diameter American cake pan has been used for this recipe.

Although the preparation of the dough takes time, it is worth it! However, if you prefer to prepare it faster, you can substitute it with puff pastry.
